Best Thing I read this week

Posted: October 14, 2013 in Uncategorized

The best thing I read this week was an article on NHL.com about Jason Pominville returning to Buffalo for the first time since getting traded away to the Minnesota Wild. Pominville was a fan favorite during his time in Buffalo as well as one of my favorite players on the Sabres. It was tough times in Buffalo last year to see a great player like Jason get traded away for ‘players of the future.’ But if things were bad in Buffalo last season, I don’t know how it can get much worse now with the Sabres sitting dead last in the NHL at 0-5-1.

Pominville’s return tonight might be one of the few bright spots surrounding the game tonight if the Sabres continue to struggle to find their first win.

Best thing I Read This Week

The best thing I read this week was inspired out of hatred for certain NHL franchise. The Philadelphia Flyers just piss me off. I don’t like them at all, and to see their off to just as bad as a start as buffalo makes me smile. And today they announced the firing of their head coach, Peter Laviolette. Here’s the article from ESPN

Let the Suffering Begin

Posted: October 7, 2013 in Uncategorized

Three games, two goals, one week and zero wins to show for it. Not the best numbers to open up the first week of the season; in fact the Buffalo Sabres are off to their worst start ever. In their history as a franchise, the Sabres have never lost their opening three games in regulation.

It seems like the Sabres are continuing where they left off last season; struggling to create offense, looking lost on defense, and relying on their goaltenders to bail them out of close games.

Everyone got a taste of the NHL realignment last Wednesday. It was great to see them open up their season against a new division rival in the Detroit Red Wings, but honestly, they got embarrassed, and the whole country got to witness it on the NBC sports network. The final 2-1 score was a lot closer than the game really was. The Red Wings skated circles around a young Buffalo team in what looked more like an AHL vs. NHL exhibition matchup.

Their home opener was a better effort, and two of the best goalies the United States has to offer got to showcase their abilities. But there were no heroes for the home team, falling to one measly goal scored by Erik Karlsson late in the third period. In a game where your goaltender stops 45 out of 46 shots, your offense better have something to show for. Leaving a big fat goose egg on the scoreboard in their home opener is not the way to start off a season.

On Saturday, they fared no better against a stacked Penguins team. Thomas Vanek finally found the back of the net, but the rest of their offense was nowhere to be found, and their puck control was miserable. Although he let up 3 goals, Enroth looked good in net for Buffalo filling in for an injured Miller.

The Sabres will look to get their first win of the season this Tuesday at home against the Tampa Bay Lighting.

The best thing I read this week was an article about a baby sipping on a beer after the A’s clinched the AL west. I first saw the picture on The Chive and thought it was pretty hilarious how the camera captured this moment in the background. It just goes to show you that nothing in the sports world is safe from the media.

A View Unlike Any Other

The view from the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box is a view unlike any other in First Niagara Center. It’s a sight most fans don’t get to witness in their lifetime. For guys like Mike Harrington and Jon Vogl of the Buffalo News, it’s nothing special, but for the average fan like myself, it’s an unforgettable experience.

114

The first thing you notice upon entering the box are the seemingly endless pictures hanging on the walls. Artwork, depicting the history of a franchise. The lasting memories illustrating some of the legends to wear a Sabres uniform. One of my personal favorites is this picture of Dominik Hasek, arguably the greatest goaltender of all-time.

The pass you wear around your neck adds to the entire experience, you feel legit. It’s a symbol that you’ve earned your seat in that box. It shows that you’ve put in the countless hours writing about the sport you love, with no promise for anything in return.

The game finally begins and you sit in awe as you realize that you’re amongst  some the hockey’s best writers, watching the team that you’ve grown to love. The only thing that would make things better is some food…

And of course, to top things off there’s a complimentary concession stand for everyone in the box. Writers tend to get cranky if they don’t get their intermission snacks.

111

Just a casual press conference with the Buffalo Sabres GM, Darcy Regier (not my favorite person in the Sabres franchise).

It’s not uncommon to see some well known faces up there. Players, coaches, NHL officials, and even sometimes you get to hangout with legends like Rick Jeanneret. His unmistakable antics and wild enthusiasm while calling Sabres games makes him one of the best and most well renowned hockey broadcasters of all time.

After the game you head downstairs to sit in on the head coach’s press conference. It’s always a more pleasant experience following Buffalo win.

237And then it’s time to write your post game piece…

Sabres Season Outlook

Posted: September 25, 2013 in Uncategorized

Following one of toughest seasons in recent memory, the Buffalo Sabres are looking to turn things around this year. With ample young talent on the ice lead by new head coach, Ron Rolston, things are looking up in Buffalo for the start of the 2013-14 NHL season. Here’s an article on where I think this team drastically needs improvement from last year.

With the start of the hockey season right around the corner, I had to go with a Buffalo Sabres pre-season article. This past week, the Sabres took on the Carolina Hurricanes and smoked them in a 5-2 beating. The Sabres continue to impress so far this pre-season, with hopes of turning things around in Buffalo after last year’s disappointment. Here’s the article from Buffalo News.
